Pricing and Distribution Policy
Addgene is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing the scientific community with open, efficient and affordable access to plasmid research tools. While it is free to deposit plasmids, Addgene charges a nominal fee to request plasmids. This fee is used to cover operating costs and to improve the repository.
All requests must be placed online.
Addgene accepts requests ONLY from academic or non-profit organizations. If you are from a commercial entity, we can direct you to a contact person at the institution that provided the plasmids. Some institutions can provide the plasmids to you under an MTA.
Pricing Policy for Requesting Plasmids
Addgene's pricing structure is detailed in the chart below.
Shipping: Plasmids are shipped as bacterial stabs at room temperature. Shipping prices vary based on the number of plasmids requested. For the first five plasmids, shipping is $20 for US addresses and $45 for international addresses. Customs and Duties for International Shipping: Please note that requesting scientists are responsible for making arrangements for prompt payment of applicable duties and taxes assessed by your country's customs agent. Addgene makes every effort to provide the required paperwork for customs clearance. If special circumstances exist, please advise us as soon as possible at help@addgene.org. Discounts: Addgene's goal is to make research tools available to the entire scientific community. If your laboratory cannot afford the standard prices, Addgene can help defray this cost. This policy exists to enable the distribution of materials to underfunded labs (e.g. in developing countries). If you believe your lab qualifies, please email Addgene with a brief explanation of your financial situation at help@addgene.org. Depositing Labs: If a lab loses any of the plasmids they have deposited, they can recover these plasmids from Addgene. The lab will be given a discounted price of $5 per plasmid, plus shipping/handling. To receive this special pricing, please email Addgene at help@addgene.org.
Distribution Policy
Addgene can only ship plasmids to academic and non-profit institutions. Institutions that have deposited materials at Addgene require a Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) for each request of materials through Addgene. Addgene has deployed an electronic MTA system to streamline this process. Most MTAs are approved within 2 to 3 business days. For more information, click here. Most requests will be covered under the Uniform Biological Materials Transfer Agreement (UBMTA) (PDF). All purchases are subject to Addgene's Terms of Purchase.
