Timer protein, a derivative of DsRed, undergoes a spontaneous and irreversible green-to-red emission shift as it matures over time. Newly synthesized Timer molecules emit green fluorescence, which gradually shifts to red over time. Bacteria can be identified as actively replicating (green), intermediate (orange), or non-replicating (red) based on their green-to-red fluorescence ratio.
